When a conductivity analyzer is used to monitor water quality in a power plant or other source of ultrapure water, the measurement can be distorted by the presence of treatment chemicals such as ammonia and amines. An easy way to eliminate the interference due to treatment chemicals is to pass the feedwater or condensate through a cation exchange column before conductivity is measured. When the cation exchange
cartridge removes the alkaline treatment chemicals which interfere, it conveys
an additional benefit: metal cations are replaced by hydrogen ions. This
increases the sensitivity of the conductivity reading. Hydrogen ions are
the most mobile of all the positively charged cations. Because hydrogen
ions have the greatest ability to conduct electricity, when hydrogen ions
replace sodium, calcium and other cations, conductivity increases. |
The ability of the conductivity analyzer to detect changes in water quality is enhanced in two ways. The interference due to alkaline chemicals is removed and the sensitivity to other impurities is increased.

| The Aqualert
Model 1101 Cation Exchange Cartridge has 3200 grains of cation exchange
capacity, enough to provide many months of continuous reliable operation.
The flow capacity of the cartridge is sufficient to handle the sample stream
to any standard conductivity analyzer. Only the cations are exchanged. The
anions in the sample such as chloride and sulfate are not affected. The resin will remove over 99% of the metal ions in the sample stream. The built-in color indicator of the resin changes from black to light brown as capacity is depleted. |
Waltron offers two types of brackets for mounting the cartridge: The Single Bracket Model 1111 and the Duplex Bracket Model 1112. Both are made of heavy duty stamped steel and are provided with pressure fitting(s), tubing, washer(s), lower receiving block(s), and a brass shut off valve. With the Duplex Bracket installed with two cartridges, if the first cartridge is depleted, the second cartridge continues to treat the sample. When the spent cartridge is replaced, the back?up cartridge is shifted to the upstream position. Thus the new cartridge always becomes the back-up. Easy to follow installation instructions are included with each bracket. |
